My new Macbook Pro has arrived. Here’s what I think:
It’s completely silent. Gives off no heat. Does it even have a fan? Cause it has never been on. This has to be because of the SSD (Solid State Drive) on 128 Gb. I’m writing this in my bed; my old laptop would be glowing of heat now, probably burst the bed on fire if hold there for to long.
It’s superfast. Graphics card and the Intel Core Duo 2 on 2,8 Ghz. 4 Gb RAM. Photoshop starts from being closed in only 3 seconds, where my old laptop took 30 seconds to open Photoshop.
Some people have been concerned about the glossy screen, including me. I have never used it before, this is my first glossy. I put it next to my older Macbook Pro 15″ screen and my 23″ flatscreen and compare them… They look weak in comparison. This new screen is so bright and clear you completely forget it’s glossy. Well, I actually start to like the glossy, cause this isn’t no plastic glossy, this is real glass. It speaks out quality.
It’s built out of a solid brick of aluminium. Which makes it look very clean and very solid. Professional.
The keyboard. All though some don’t like the black keyboard, I love it. Been waiting for the Macbook Pro to update with a new keyboard for over a year. This is the shit, especially when it glows in the dark. Beautiful.
The new trackpad is also beautiful, all though I haven’t been used to it yet. The button have been removed and built into the trackpad with a real push-down click. I would have wanted a bit more sensitive click, it’s a bit hard to push down. Multitouch is the greatest though. Scrolling, zooming, going back and forth through pages with three fingers. A time saver.
Firewire 400 is gone. I think that is pretty weird, cause in the beginning when you install the computer, OS X asks if I want to move account info from my older laptop onto this new one - with Firewire 400. Which doesn’t exist. How am I supposed to do that? I also have Sony video cameras that uses Firewire 400. Need to buy a converter now, not sure that is very common? 400 -> 800 converter. Also had to buy with converters from the “new screen mini standard cable plug”. To use my Macbook Pro with the 50″ plasma at work, I need to connect a HDMI cable to a HDMI to DVI converter. Then use a DVI to mini-plug converter. Hmm?
Battery life? One of the reasons I wanted to buy a new laptop was because my old one had a battery life of 15 minutes. Tried my new one out, brought it home with the power adapter to see if it could last a couple of hours. It is good for 5 hours, so well done! It will probably get worse over years, of course. But the new screen and the SSD drive takes much less power. The fan never comes on, so that is energy saving too.
Conclusion. This is the most beautiful, powerful laptop in the world right now. And it rocks. SSD was more powerful than I could have dreamed of, highly recommended even if it’s only 128 Gb. You can buy with a portable harddrive for music and projects your not working on at the moment. If you don’t do video and 3d animation, or need the bigger screen for design, I would suggest the cheaper new Macbook.
